Why do people lie? Do we have to lie?? People might tend to lie for some good reasons or bad reasons such as to avoid hurting others' feelings, to conceal their real feelings or reactions, to avoid punishments for misdeeds, to get something illegally from the person whom he or she intends to cheat.
In fact, there are studies show that individuals describe their own behavior indicate that people use deception in almost 20 percent of their social interactions, and experiments indicate that a majority of strangers lie to each other at least once during a brief first encounter.
Shakespeare once wrote: "Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance".
So,what is actually nonverbal cues? Nonverbal cues are the signs of nonverbal language that do not involve any spoken language. There are five basic channels of nonverbal cues: facial expressions, eye contact, body movements, posture and touching.
It is important for us to reveal the fact when others are trying to deceive us. These tips may help you to avoid this thing occurs and pay careful attention to the tricky deceivers which are:-
1) MICROEXPRESSIONS: These are fleeting expressions lasting only a few tenths of a second. Such reactions appear on the face quickly after an emotion-provoking event and are difficult to suppress. For instance, if you ask someone whether he or she likes something (e.g., idea you have expressed, something you have just purchased), watch his or her face closely as he or she responds. If you see one expression (e.g., frown), which is followed quickly by another (e.g., smile), this can be useful sign that he or she is lying; he or she is stating one opinion or reaction when in fact, he or she has another.
2) INTERCHANNEL DISCREPANCIES: The term channel refers to the type of nonverbal cues; for instance, facial expressions are one channel, body movements are another. These are inconsistencies between nonverbal cues from different basic channels. It is a fact that people who are lying often find it difficult to control all these channels at once. For example, they may manage their facial expressions well but may have difficulty looking you straightly in the eye as they tell their lie.
3) EYE CONTACT: People who are lying often blink more often and show pupils that are more dilated than people who are telling the truth.
4) EXAGGERATED FACIAL EXPRESSIONS: People who are lying may smile more or more broadly than usual or may show greater sorrow than is typical in a given situation. For example, someone says no to a request you have made and then shows exaggerated regret.
5) LINGUISTIC STYLE: When people are lying, the pitch of their voices often rises-especially when they are highly motivated to lie. Similarly, they often take longer to begin or to respond to a question or describe events and they may show a greater tendency to start sentences, stop them, and begin again.
In sum, we can often tell when others are lying or merely trying to hide their feelings from us, but sometimes we may fail to detect their deceptions because some people are skillfull liars. But if you pay careful attention to the cues described, you may succes in revealing their deceptions.
